Spring
Spring is a time of rebirth, when new life starts to grow and flowers start opening. The weather can be very different in Squamish during each of the three seasons: spring, fall and winter.
In Squamish during spring, the temperature is usually mild with sunny days. There may be a few showers or thunderstorms in the evening or early morning, but they are usually short-lived. The water temperature can still be quite cold, so it’s important to layer up if you’re going out for a walk or bike ride.
In fall, the temperatures start to drop and there may be some light rain or snowfall in the morning. By mid-afternoon, the sun will be shining and it will be hot and humid. Fall is also a great time to visit Squamish’s many wineries!
In winter, the temperatures are usually very cold at first and can stay that way for several weeks. Snowfall can remain all winter long, making it difficult to travel around town or get outdoors. However, one of the beauties of Squamish during winter is watching the snow melts – it’s always worth checking Facebook or Twitter for weather alerts just to see how things are changing!
Fall
Fall is a time of change, when the leaves fall from the trees and the days get shorter. This season brings cooler temperatures and sometimes rain. In Squamish, the temperature can be quite variable depending on the time of day or week – but there are some constants that always remain during this time of year.
One constant is thatSquamish experiences a great deal of variation in precipitation. Fall is usually dry, with only a couple of notable exceptions. There have been two major fall storms in Squamish: one in October 2012 which resulted in widespread flooding and another in early September 2016 which left sections of town submerged under more than a metre of water.
Another constant throughout fall is that the sun sets earlier each day. This trend is especially noticeable towards the end of the month when the sun sets around 5pm instead of 6pm.
Winter
Winter in Squamish is a time of change. The mountains become ethereal and the trees barren. The days are shorter and the nights colder. There is a sense of peace and calm that comes with the season. The best way to experience winter in Squamish is to take advantage of its natural amenities.
